The KVPY Summer Programme: Discussion

As I laid out in the 'above' thread, this is the discussion thread. Please abuse...

Your topic is really very interesting, and u can carry on your research on this topic even after this summer..

As for institute, i think IISc is a better choice... coz it already has loads of research going (I think so)

And do you want everyone to post seperately their about their Project? It'll b easier to discuss about a particular project on that post and discuss general stuff here.

Thanks so much for that advice. I've been in inner turmoil trying to decide where I could possibly go. If you could post a bit about the institutes up north, I'd be really grateful.

I infact was thinking about a post per, but I thought against it because:

a) It'd push people's projects out of the page, and we all know out of sight == out of mind

b) I thought people might not write as much, because the activation energy required for posting a new topic is higher than just a comment.

c) Its nice to have everything in one place. We could still make a new post per, but we should have a seperate post to keep everything nicely together. The post serves to organize as much as anything else. Can we 'sticky' a post? Boy are we abusing the blog as a forum.


Ok, I'd like to see your work (do you have anything written down, other than the C++ code?). I'm not sure exactly what your doing, and i'm sorry if i offend, but I don't know what your researching. I'm really lost in that I have NULL idea of what's already out there and what isn't. I know that the topic I've chosen is still alive (but most probably out of my domain), so I thought why not. But I'd have thought the Fourier analysis of radio signals to have been beaten down upon by many a scientist.

Nonetheless, I can recommend that you use a CAS system (something like Maple, MatLab, etc.) if your not already using them. There are good Free (as in freedom) packages (Maxima, Axiom for Maple, Octave for MatLab). They'd help you a lot in doing a lot of the more complex analysis. There also is the GNU R system, which is also Free (as in freedom), and thats a standard university package, used everywhere. I've not used it, but it seems to be rather good. SAGE is a large package that combines almost everything under a uniform nice interface. All of these work on all platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac). Also for plotting, you should try gnuPlot, which is also university standard. (NOTE: Octave is also uni standard)

Thats is a gud long list of resources!!

At the moment I'm using very basic softwares (Mathematica for most of my calculations of fourier analysis) & Geometer's Sketchpad for Curve Sketching.

I'll try these out soon!

As for the project, well I'm a bit lazy... since I spent a long time on this silly project I thought its better to continue it..

I would like to work more upon the steps that we can take to improve Radio Tuning (Better Clarity and stuff)

A big update on my progress, I've posted two emails to two profs. both at IIT Kanpur. Here is the content:

I am a fellow under the KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana) programme, and as part of our activities, I wish to spend 3-4 weeks under your guidance working on a project. I would like to specify what the KVPY programme is, as well as my research interests and qualifications below:

KVPY
The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana is a programme sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, and is managed by IISc, Bangalore. The programme basically seeks to help young students enter the field of research at an early age (from 11th till the applicant receives a PhD). Every year, a summer programme is conducted, where students are required to work under the mentor ship of a professor of any national institute. Qualifications:
I have just completed my 12th standard in the Andhra Pradesh State Board. I have been preparing for the IIT's the past two years, and feel that I have performed well in the exam. I have done well in a number a talent exams, getting 6th Rank in the XVIII "Dr. A S Rao Science Talent Search Examination", as well as 16th Rank in the Unified Council Science Talent Exam.

I have been avidly interested in programming, and am quite strong with C++. I also know a bit of Java and Python. I have dabbled a bit in electronics, including micro controllers (to a very limited extent). I have been just as interested with AI, but I have not done any work in the field.

I am very interested in robotics, and AI, especially those areas concerned with how autonomous systems interact with each other. I am also interested in how networks of systems can work together symbiotically, to be more efficient, or to produce intelligence. With regards to your work, I am interested in working on the Soccer Bot Project. In particular, I would like to see if I can make the soccer bots work completely autonomously, without having to communicate with the computer to coordinate the actions ( i.e. detect where other bots are and the corresponding strategy that should be used). I understand that the present system already incorporates all the aspects of AI important for the game, however, I feel that by making each bot independent, the setup could show more likeliness to human game playing, and might result in some interesting behaviour.

Yup, I mentioned it in 'my interests'. Here I wrote basically, that my interests and the professors interests were similar, and that the prof. worked on a project I'm interested in. I don't know if it was sufficient, but I'm just going to cross my fingers.

imbksumsorry guys i cant help you because i met prof.s.dattagupta at iiserkol and verbally requested him to be my mentor-he consented and i wrote him an application saying the same thing again for the record and then he set me up for 30th apr.thts all.
i hav yet to select a topic and 'project' myself.

Incase u do have some idea about fourier analysis, then all it says is that every function can be expressed in term of a sine & cosine series.

So our main aim is to evaluate the information signal by finding all the coefficients of its equivalent since & cosine series.

The signal sent by each radio station is AM (Must have done that in Communications chapter) So our radio receives a combined function...

Started working on it as a Maths Lab project, later won an Interschool Maths Project award for it.
An extended project based on my work was selected for the Intel Science Fair (Alas I had my preboards at that time)

Fourier analysis is one of the most important developments in maths that really revolutionised a lot of electronics. It was actually discovered by a French dude doing some thermal nonsense (compared to what it could be used for). It had been looked in by other people, but Fourier proved that *ANY* function (even highly irregular, and almost discontinous) functions can be represented by fourier series.

The major use I guess is that now you can represent any function through a sin cos function, which is very easy to differentiate and integrate. The algorithms for calculating them have become super-efficient too.

Do read through the wikipedia article. It gives a good read, and shows how to use the fourier series as well.
